Kendo – The Way of the Sword

Kendo means “Way of the Sword”. It is a modern Japanese martial art originating from the way samurai practiced their swordsmanship. Rooted in centuries of tradition, Kendo offers unique blend of physical and mental training.

This is a 6-week introductory course to kendo. It is inteneded for practitioners with no prior experience in kendo. Everyone over 18 years of age is welcome.

All of the instructors in our Beginners Course have multiple years of kendo coaching experience, and have represented Ireland in multiple international competitions abroad.

What You’ll Learn

  • Fundamental aspects of reiho (etiquette)
  • Basic kendo terminology
  • Kendo footwork and posture
  • Essential kendo waza (attacking techniques)
  • Key kendo exercises (e.g. kirikaeshi, uchikomi…)
  • Start kata (fixed pattern) practice

The Kendo Beginners Course Starts Monday, 1st July 2024

The beginners course takes place from July 1st to August 5th 2024. The training is from 8pm until 10pm at Lough Community Centre. The course requires no prior preparation, all the required equipment will be provided by the club. We recommend that you attend practice in comfortable sports clothing. There is no specific fitness requirement for this course.
